Kids intrigued by ancient animals will enjoy these new additions to the 21st Century Junior Library: Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures series. Clarity and simplicity reign supreme in these slim volumes, each dedicated to a specific prehistoric creature. In three short chapters, the animal is introduced ("What Was Brachiosaurus?") and described physically ("What Did Brachiosaurus Look Like?") and behaviorally ("How Did Brachiosaurus Live?"). Using two-page spreads throughout, the left-hand page features a captioned illustration ther digital renditions or a photograph ile the right contains a few sentences of simple text with glossary terms in bold and an occasional colored bar with critical thinking prompts. Mammoth and Mastodon compares the woolly behemoths to modern elephants and points out differences in their size, habitat, and behavior. While the illustrations aren't particularly exciting, the text effectively contextualizes each animal and explains how scientists have learned about them. A rounded introduction to dinos and prehistoric beasts that doesn't dig too deep.
