Slightly larger than the previous editions of Branley's book on storms, this re-illustrated version uses its broad double-page spreads to better advantage, often combining elements from several small pictures into one large composition. Textual changes are minor, but the new last page, entitled Find Out More about Thunderstorms, includes directions for making a rain gauge, forming a cloud of water vapor, and finding weather-related Web sites on the Internet. Kelley's ink-and-watercolor illustrations add to the appeal of this welcome new edition of a Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science classic. (Reviewed July 1999)

K-Gr 4This useful book, first published with humdrum illustrations by Ed Emberley (Crowell, 1964; o.p.), underwent a major metamorphosis in 1985, with a rearranged and revised text accompanied by colorful, inviting illustrations by Barbara and Ed Emberley. Now, in a general revamping of the entire series, this simple treatise on thunder and lightning has been transformed. The text contains minor revisions, and Kelleys watercolor illustrations are bright and appealing. Diagrams are clearer and labeling promotes easier interpretation. Also included, for active home investigators (or enthusiastic classroom teachers), is a page containing two simple weather experiments and a list of three Internet weather sites.
