Gr 4-6-These short profiles are interspersed with maps, reproductions, facsimiles of documents, and photographs. The texts are clear and accurate, but relatively dry. Facts are stated in a dull recitative voice that gets the information across but without any panache whatsoever. The Spanish translations are accurate but no more inspirational than the English. Notwithstanding, the content is solid, certainly a plus given the dearth of information on Attucks, Love, and especially Alvarez, a heroine of the Texas Revolution. Each volume concludes with a time line, glossary, one-size-fits-all Web address, and a brief, half-page index. For collections in need of biographies, these are reasonable additions. During the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848, Francisca Alvarez saved the lives of many American soldiers captured by Santa Ana's forces. Using primary source images to explore Alvarez' life, this moving account explains how--under standing orders from General Santa Ana--all captured American soldiers were to be shot. Francisca Alvarez, known as "The Angel of Goliad," intervened and secured pardons for a number of men before they were executed
