An early recap of backstory from the first two novels quickly fills in the gaps and helps set the steady stride. Finding clues about his father's apparent death and his relation to the Abeona Shelter, which rescues children in danger, does take an occasional backseat to other problems. First up, his best friend Ema's missing online boyfriend. Mickey is not sure what bothers him most about this: that Ema has a boyfriend and didn't tell him, that he may be developing feelings of his own for the goth girl, or that her boyfriend may be linked to the Abeona Shelter as well. Still hoping to become a basketball standout on his high-school varsity team, Mickey also becomes embroiled in a rival's doping charge. He may not like all the answers he finds, but fans will sure enjoy the solid resolutions. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Coben is a giant author and that commands a giant promo push.
