Kevin Keller, Riverdale High's first openly gay student, was introduced in 2010 to the obligatory indignant huffing and puffing. But even for the Archie universe, this is remarkably inoffensive stuff. Handsome, blond-haired Kevin is the ultimate perfect kid, a guy who can put down more burgers than Jughead, stand up to bullies, outrun the athletes, outpace the intellectuals, and on and on. Thankfully, as this six-issue compendium moves along, flashbacks to Kevin's past as a brace-faced geek at least suggest he wasn't always so flawless. The first couple of issues, perhaps understandably, tiptoe a bit, as if afraid to really let loose with classic Archie-style high jinks. Later issues, though, are funnier and brave in their own ways, providing insights to Kevin's sexual awakening (though that phrase is far too suggestive for the innocent way in which it's handled!), his plan to enter the military after graduation, and a class-prez debate where he's being slandered for being "light in the loafers." Rough around the edges, but welcome nonetheless d getting better each issue.
