This title in the Rock Cycle series introduces readers to the creation, characteristics, and uses of sand, silt, and mud, all three of which are clasts (small, broken pieces of rock). As a part of the rock cycle, they have an important impact on the environment, as well as in agriculture and construction. The brief chapters are well illustrated with attractive color photographs, though the overall format is somewhat muddied. Supplemental "Did You Know?" pages are sometimes oddly placed, disrupting the reading of the central text. These factoids are in bold type, and on a page where there are several, they overwhelm. A glossary is included at the end, though glossary words are not highlighted in the text. Books and websites for further reading are included, and an index completes the volume.
