Starred Review Taking the well-regarded Captured History series in a new direction, these handsome volumes from the new Captured Sports History series focus on iconic photographs in athletics. Illustrated with excellent color photos, each book showcases one picture by explaining its backstory as well as what is happening in the moment it was taken. In addition, it introduces the photographer and discusses why that particular image resonates with many viewers. Miracle on Ice opens with an account of the semifinal hockey game during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, in which Team USA won against the more experienced team from the Soviet Union. Burgan offers introductions to key players and moment-by-moment action on the ice as well as a succinct discussion of Cold War sports in general and, in particular, the end-of-game jubilation depicted in the photo. Clearly written and informative, this riveting series is ideal for fans of sports, history, and photography.
