When she signed up for summer camp at Camp Singing Hills, Charlotte thought it would be a great way to make friends before starting high school. Unfortunately, the camp bully, Madison, has other plans. After Charlotte gets on Madison's bad side by sticking up for a flustered counselor, Madison tries everything in her sneaky mental toolbox to turn the rest of the cabin against Charlotte and make her experience miserable. Charlotte attempts to stay strong and make friends anyway, but as Madison grows more spiteful, Charlotte begins to wonder if there isn't something more to Madison than pure cruelty. The stakes here are fairly low, and the resolution happens too quickly to be truly satisfying, but the situation will be familiar for many middle-school Orca Currents readers. At its base, this straightforward and accessible friendship tale is a worthwhile exploration of character, fortitude, and what might motivate a bully to be unkind.
