After watching storm clouds gather on a windy day, a dog and her puppy head toward a nearby house. Outdoors, wild animals reassure and protect their babies. Moles snuggle in their burrow, and ducklings huddle by their mother, while a mama whale and her little one dive deep beneath the pounding waves. Giraffes, wolves, sloths, bobcats, sheep, chimpanzees, bears, and rabbits weather the winds and rain as best they can, and in the cozy house, the dog tells her pup that the storm will end, concluding, "I love you. Good night!" Each double-page spread features an animal family along with a rhymed couplet such as, "While the raging storm bends every branch on the tree, / Snuggle close, my little owl, between the big tree and me." There's a certain sameness to the verses, but they do hammer home the message with conviction. Bell's graceful, swirling illustrations capture the drama of storms in locales near and far, while portraying the animals with gentleness and affection. A reassuring picture book for young children.

PreS-K Reassuring glimpses of adult animals keeping their young safe from storms begin with a dog and pup heading indoors as black clouds gather. Spread-length illustrations with muted colors depict the power of winds and rain without overwhelming young listeners. They can focus on the protections provided by a parent's closeness whether in a bears' den, owls' sturdy tree, or bobcats' sheltering ledge. The rhymed couplet included with each illustration features the voice of the adult soothing its young. From giraffes on the savanna to whales beneath the ocean, all will weather the storms. The final pages return to dog and pup, first gazing through a window at the pelting rain outside, then snuggling together to sleep. Caroline Starr Rose offers a more sustained account of a single storm in Over in the Wetlands (Random, 2015). VERDICT This tender overview of adult care will work best for one-on-one sharing and conversation to overcome a child's fears. A worthwhile but not essential purchase.
