Alex and Saskia don't get off to a great start. When Sass, who has recently moved to England from New York after her mother's death, sees a beautiful horse, she meets Alex, who is less than thrilled that she is trespassing on his land. But Sass is drawn to the horse, and after several more chance encounters, Alex relents and agrees to teach her how to ride. Slowly, a connection forms between them, but the budding romance is threatened by secrets: Sass is afraid to tell him about her mother's death, and Alex is hiding things himself. His parents are in the middle of a bitter divorce d his dad just happens to be the Prince of Wales. This is a sweet romance, complete with a beautiful Cornwall setting, seaside horseback riding, and a meddling reporter. A few plot points, such as one involving Alex's fellow stablehand, go unresolved, but fans looking for a slow-burning story of summer love are sure to forgive that. Good for fans of horses and royalty stories alike.

After her mother's sudden death, Brooklyn native Saskia relocates to Cornwall, where she naively fails to recognize a horse trainer as Prince Alex, a member of England's royal family hiding from the paparazzi during his parents' divorce. It grows increasingly difficult for Alex to keep his identity secret as he and Sass begin to bond. Trite secondary characters pop in and out of this undercooked romance to laboriously move the plot along.

The book opens at an elite British school's posh summer ball just after Alex has heard from a reporter that his mother and father are splitting up. He should be used to the press having the scoop on his life before he did, but it still hurts enough that he decides to leave the party and his school to go to his grandmother's house.áThen the reader is introduced to Saskia ("Sass") as she tries desperately to escape the pain and sadness of her own life by running into fields and finally into the neighbor's pasture, where a beautiful silver horse gives her a grounding moment of peace. With beautiful wordsmithery and imagery, a touch of mystery, and a dreamlike romance, Hickman delivers her story by slowly acquainting readers with the secrets in Alex's and Sass's lives. Readers with a polished imagination will feel that they are watching a movie. After the sudden death of her mother, Sass has come to England to live with an uncle she had never met before. Alex is trying to escape his royal responsibilities by living with his grandmother and riding the horses he has grown up with. This is a lovely read that will appeal to girls and boys with a romantic heart.cj Bott.

Sass flew down the coast path. After about a mile, she came to a bay, a sweep of dark wet sand watched over by rocky cliffs on either side. And below her, galloping through the water, was a horse and rider. She followed the cliff path until she saw a skinny shortcut down. It wasn't much more than a parting in the bracken, most likely made by sheep, not people. As she made her way toward the sand, she could see that the horse had wheeled around and was now racing away from her, spooking at the wind, and the waves. When the rider reached the end of the shore, he sat down, half-circled smoothly and brought the horse back to a trot. With a shock of recognition, she realized her mistake. A big one. The rider coming towards her was him: the boy from the meadow. He stared, then gave her a curt nod, and reined in his horse which sidled to a halt. He corrected it with an impatient tap of his heels, and it overreacted, skittering backwards in a cold splash of spray. The boy studied Sass as if she was a crab who'd crawled out from under a rock. She felt suddenly self-conscious in her ragged jeans and man's shirt. "You know you're trespassing again," he said. Her discomfort turned to indignation. 'Oh, I'm sorry! Is this your beach? I better go then.' He took off his helmet and ran a hand through his tousled hair. 'What were you doing up there? He asked. 'Were you watching me?' "I didn't know it was you. I was sort of watching your horse. He's very beautiful." And has better manners than you, she thought. He gave her a strange look, and before he could say anything else, Sass spun around and strode off. "Don't worry," she called over her shoulder. "I won't bother you again." She could feel his eyes on her as she struggled back up the narrow path. This place: England. She didn't belong here. With all her heart, she wanted to go home.

A modern fairy tale that explores the ache of loss as beautifully as it captures the breathless excitement of first love.

After losing her mom in an accident, Sass is sent to live with her uncle in England. Far from her native Brooklyn, the rocky shores and crumbling castles of Cornwall seem like the perfect place to hide her grief. And when she stumbles across a silver horse in a sunlit meadow, Sass feels a surprising sense of peace . . . only to have it broken by a boy. Arrogant and distrustful, the horse's trainer, Alex, doesn't approve of the trespassing American. Yet after a few chance meetings, he begins to feel a connection to the curious girl with the sad eyes, and offers to teach her to ride. Sass never expected to feel anything again--least of all love--but the lessons reveal a far different Alex, and soon their friendship turns into something more. But Alex has a secret--a bombshell about his family that could shatter Sass's trust . . . and force him to abandon the one girl who made him believe in himself.
