ALA Booklist (Sat Oct 01 00:00:00 CDT 2016)

The premise of this volume in the Combatting Shaming and Toxic Communities, enhanced by jazzy graphics, is clear: given the "online disinhibition effect" (cyberspace tends to bring out the beast in anonymous posters) and the fact that in its early decades the gaming industry was largely aimed at and shaped by male fantasies of a violent, misogynistic bent, female fans and creators have been the target of horrendous harassment. Yet today "nearly half of all gamers are female." It's progress, to be sure, and there's solidarity in numbers. Relevant advocacy groups are listed in an appendix, alongside a superfluous glossary of use only to the truly clueless. Oddly enough, support communities such as Not in the Kitchen Anymore commended thrice in the text nd no place in the end matter.

Discrimination in the gamer community is rampant, as evidenced by the recent GamerGate controversy. Though females make up 45 percent of all gamers, nearly 90 percent of all game designers are male. This has resulted in troubling portrayals of women in the games, which can leave lasting impressions on young people playing them. Even more serious is the abuse women face in gamer communities and as professionals in the industry. This timely resource will help teens make sense of the issues facing them when they participate in video game culture.
