The trouble starts with an empty toilet paper roll. Gordon and Tapir are roommates, and when Gordon penguin scovers Tapir has hoarded all the toilet paper in his room (mostly for an artful, beehive-shaped hat), Gordon loses it. The noise! The mess! Tapir's friend Hippo, who has been living in the bathtub for days! Tapir, however, is not too pleased either rdon is far too fastidious, and Tapir is never invited to his fancy-pants all-penguin club. Can their friendship be saved? With subtle color changes emphasizing the story's mood (grayscale while Gordon and Tapir contemplate life apart, for instance), Meschenmoser's softly rendered colored-pencil illustrations of the naturalistic but anthropomorphized odd-couple duo are full of intricate details. Gordon, for instance, favors clean lines and modern design eck out that Mondrian print on the wall ile Tapir prefers splashy prints and bold colors. The interior designs are exceptionally well done, though they might appeal more to adults than the book's target audience. Still, the charming story of friendship surviving conflict will likely resonate with kids learning to handle differences with friends.
