ALA Booklist (Wed Mar 01 00:00:00 CST 2017)

Accessible and attractive, the United States of America series presents a volume on each state as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The two- and four-page chapters have practical titles, such as "Cities," "Geography," "Natural Resources," and "Transportation." Each book's subtitle is one of that state's nicknames, while the others appear on the useful double-page spread of "Quick Facts," along with the capital, motto, population, number of U.S. senators and representatives, and so on. The many well-chosen illustrations include colorful photos, maps, and period paintings and prints. Throughout each book, Hamilton does a good job of showing what makes that state different from the others by pointing out distinctive features, from the state's climate and history to the cultural and sports activities that people enjoy there. In Alaska, the text discusses the state's expansive geography and touches on the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Well organized for school reports, the books also provide useful background information for young people traveling in the area.
