The second volume of the Pirate Penguinvs. Ninja Chicken series delivers more of the same comical and offbeat moments between the two frenemies. Reckless and sporadic penguin continuously causes trouble for the straitlaced and disciplined chicken, first in a series of short comics, then in a longer story halfwaythrough, involving chicken having to save penguin from a gang of privateers. The mixture of short and long stories makes this ideal for junior chapter-book readers and reluctant readers simultaneously. The story lines may be simple, but the jokesare plentiful and refreshingly original. (Penguin claiming that replacing hands is common medical practice for both "pirates AND Jedi" is hilariously on point.) Friesen'sheavy outlining and sharp colors make his characters pop, adding to the fun and the bubblegum feel. With thefirst installment being a hidden gem that flew under many people's radars, this is a great title for that kid that's already read everything else and looking for something fresh.
