Sally the teddy bear finds herself alone in a rainy wood one night, after her petulant, bratty owner throws her out the car window. On plush legs, she toddles around the forest before being captured first by an owl and then by a dog. She is about to hit the dog in the snout with a rock when the Kurdles, a gang of odd creatures, asks her kindly not to do it. Pentapus, a five-legged stuffed cephalopod; Hank, a unicorn-headed man; and Phineas, a scarecrow, take Sally in and promise to return her home if she can help them solve a big problem. Their house, you see, has sprouted purple hair and a pair of giant eyes. Goodin fills each panel with cinematic, hand-painted scenes that, while certainly for kids, are slightly eerie, though never truly scary. The toylike creatures and Muppetesque house are in appealingly sharp contrast to the soft, natural tones of the surrounding forest, which only serves to emphasize the off-kilter atmosphere. Perfect for fans of Luke Pearson's Hildafolk series.
