This entry in the Tech Bytes series sets its sights on one particularly intriguing technological enhancement. Packed tight with detail, this comprehensive guide to the development and use of the artificial eye kicks off in ancient civilizations, when eye loss was common due to hand-to-hand combat and artificial eyes were still in the early stages of development. Now, eye loss is due primarily to diseases like cancer or military accidents, and artificial eyes are less about reassuring onlookers and more about maintaining the health of the face, especially for children who are still growing. This is fairly text-heavy, with occasional illustrations depicting diagrams of the eye or the creation of artificial eyes (using everything from molds to 3-D printers), but the subject matter is fascinating, and this is certainly thorough enough to aid in classroom research.
Voice of Youth Advocates
Tech Bytes is a series dedicated to exploring new technologies and their impacts on everyday life. Each of the books in the series begins with background and ends with a look toward the future. In between is a glimpse into the technology that makes these advancements real. Each title has a "For More Information" section that encourages further investigation into the particular tech conversation. "Did You Know?" sections are interspersed throughout the texts, and provide quick trivia about the topic at hand. Self-Driving Car, for example, factoids about the Mojave Desert being the site of a self-driving challenge; that Google has designed a "cute" self-driving car so that it does not appear dangerous; and that snow remains an obstacle for self-parking and autonomous cruise-controlled vehicles. Each book in the series is a quick read but is packed with useful and interesting data. The authors are more than just technology experts; they are also skilled writers for the youth market. What results is an easy-to-navigate series.
