Horn Book (Sat Apr 01 00:00:00 CDT 2017)

A resourceful and intelligent girl wearing a lab coat explains the just-rightness of her lovable mutt's goofy parts, including an "odd, tubby, stubby body" ("perfect for cuddling") and "four spare unmatched paws" ("but they all work"). The short, descriptive read-aloud text complements Spires's friendly, cartoonish ink and watercolor illustrations, which are elevated by emotive facial expressions and well-balanced compositions.

"When my dog was made," begins our young narrator, "they used leftover parts." She goes on to list these various parts of her dog: an odd little body that didn't go with any other dog ("Perfect for cuddling"), four mismatched legs ("They get my dog where she needs to go"), and a wet nose and drooly snout that no other dogs wanted. Those dogs may have gotten bigger brains, but this dog knows everything important, including when her human needs her. The ink-and-watercolor illustrations encapsulate the affection between the girl and her offbeat and robotic-looking, though no less lovable, pet, depicting a plethora of scenes in which the two play in the park, startle the neighbors, and give the dog mechanical tune-ups, as needed. Bright and full of energy, these will appeal to readers with "spare-parts" mutts of their own as it hammers home the idea that, more often than not, a "perfect" dog is the dog you have.
