Horn Book (Tue Aug 01 00:00:00 CDT 2017)

Now hunted for his war-altering artifacts, eleven-year-old scavenger Milo (The Orphan Army) learns the Huntsman has a new magical ally. Plenty of danger keeps the plot racing, but other than a few reveals, little develops in this second sci-fi/fantasy mash-up. Milo's moral struggles and his friends' attempts to put differences aside will keep readers interested as Maberry sets up book three.

Resuming days after The Orphan Army (2015) ended, this second title in the Nightsiders series finds 11-year-old Milo Silk and his cohorts still trying to survive devastating attacks from the Swarm cious, humongous robotic insects d their terrifying, megalomaniac human-bug hybrid leader, the Huntsman. Stopping them seems increasingly impossible, especially now that the Huntsman's allied with powerful, evil faerie Queen Mab in his efforts to conquer Earth and its inhabitants. Desperate for help, Milo and friends embark on a risky quest to a hidden historic mansion and its cryptic ghostly host, who may reveal how to beat the evil forces further imperil them all. With dramatic, humorous, and occasionally dark, edgy touches, this offers another engrossing blend of action-adventure, dystopian elements, magic, and retro sci-fi with some classic lit allusions, and its appealing, diversely drawn cast together face dangers and dilemmas with courage and ingenuity while trying to save Earth and beyond from obliteration. Fans of the series opener will welcome learning more about Milo and crew and their continuing adventures, with an eager eye on what's next.

Kirkus Reviews (Fri Oct 04 00:00:00 CDT 2024)

Eleven-year-old white Milo Silk continues to lead the Orphan Army against the evil extraterrestrial Swarm in this follow-up to The Orphan Army (2015).Milo is joined by werewolf girl Evangelyne, fire salamander Iskiel, and Mook, a rock elemental with a limited vocabulary. His second-in-command is dark-skinned and tech-savvy Shark. Milo and his friends must keep both the magical Heart of Darkness and the Dissosterin crystal egg safe from both the evil Huntsman and Queen Mab, ruler of the faeries. A doomed rescue mission kills many of their party and fractures the Heart. To salvage their cause, they must find the mythical Heir of Gadfellyn Hall. Magical beings, zombielike holo-men, and an endless parade of alien creatures keep the pages turning. However, even amid the nonstop action, there is depth. The orphans question the morality of their war and understand the cost of the lives sacrificed. While this particular quest does little to forward the overall story, it serves to expand the world, deepen the characters, and raise the stakes on their seemingly impossible war. Magic, aliens, and now…zombies—a can't-miss combination. (Fantasy/science fiction. 8-12)

Chapter 1

Milo Silk was trying very hard not to die, but the day was not cooperating.

It was that kind of day, in a week of days like that, and lately Milo seemed to have only those kinds of days and nothing else.

This one was a classic.

He ran through the thick foliage along the muddy banks of Bayou Sauvage, trying not to fall into the churning water, trying not to get eaten by alligators, and trying especially hard not to get shot by alien shocktroopers.

He wouldn’t have bet a fried circuit board or a fused diode on his chances.

All around him the Louisiana swamplands seemed to be filled with lurching shadows, bizarre shapes, and the clickety-click sound of insect legs. Blue pulses of phased energy burned through the air all around him. One blast was so close that it set his hair on fire and he had to slap his head to put it out. It wasn’t a big fire, but it was on his head, so it was big enough.

The stink of burned hair chased him through the swamp.

The hardest part, for Milo, was remembering that this was supposed to be an ambush.

Supposed to be.

It reminded him of an old saying his dad had said once when a bunch of things went wrong during a garage clean-out at their house: “When you’re up to your armpits in alligators, it’s easy to forget that you came here to drain the swamp.”

Yeah. Milo hated that saying.

Because there were alligators all over the place.

And they wanted to kill him too.

Milo must choose between risking his life to save both the human and magical universes—or to live and save only his own—in the explosive and fast-paced follow-up to the first novel in the Nightsiders series, which Kirkus Reviews called “the perfect mix of science fiction and magic” in a starred review.

After joining forces with the magical Nightsiders and surviving a trip to the enemy Bugs’ Hive ship, Milo Silk still has a lot to fear.

The Huntsman has pledged a revenge worse than death on Milo, a group of nefarious fairies are bent on taking back Earth, and zombie-like holo-men are trapping humans for the Bugs to take. Even more unsettling is that the Witch of the World has disappeared and a mysterious boy is haunting Milo’s dreams in her stead.

But none of these threats compare to what may happen to the world if the humans and the Nightsiders don’t unite to fight for each other.
