Rising gamely to the challenge of the Gross Me Out! series title, Duhaime tallies some of the body's yucky yet useful substances, highlights the good work that many microbes accomplish, and explains the origins of various digestive byproducts. The illustrations are a definite stomach-churning plus here rousing combination of all-too-close-up photos and digital images interspersed with portraits of young people with exaggeratedly nauseated expressions. Readers with an impulse to turn their bodies into science projects should be steered elsewhere, as some facts, such as that gastric juices "are strong enough to dissolve razor blades," indicate that titillation trumps common sense here. Still, none of the informational content is actually wrong, and there are review questions at the end along with a set of (safer) web sites to visit. For browsers only.
