Gr 8 Up-Kyra, abducted by aliens and returned with enhanced abilities five years later, continues to evade government agents bent on capturing her and others like her in this intermittently exciting sequel to The Taking (HarperCollins, 2014). Kyra's wracked with guilt that she was responsible for her dying boyfriend Tyler, her father, and an agent being taken by aliens. Seventeen days later, she receives information that Tyler might be alive and held captive at a nearby National Security Agency facility. Kyra is determined to break in and rescue him. The rescue attempt fails, and Willow, another member of their group, is captured. Only Simon, the group's leader, knows the secret Kyra's afraid to tell everyoneshe has unique abilities like telekinesis and superhuman strength. She's also freaked out about Simon's newly romantic interest in her. After Tyler, unsurprisingly, turns up alive, the inevitable love triangle developsdespite the fact that Tyler has no memory of their past relationship. Stolen NSA facility files reveal a devastating secret about Kyra. After a fast-paced start, this second series installment slows down considerably in the middle. Hopefully, readers will be rewarded with more action and answers in the concluding book in the trilogy. VERDICT Strictly for fans of the the previous volume. In the second volume of the Taking series, Kyra remains on the run from the NSA, and she's now paired up with fellow abductees a the Returned d in search of the boyfriend whose abduction she caused. Fast pacing will propel readers through the twists and turns of the book's first half, as Kyra employs her newfound telekinesis to outsmart her enemy, Agent Truman, and begins to question her feelings for Simon. Though the pace sags in the middle, the revelation that Kyra is not merely an alien-human hybrid but instead possesses alien blood will leave fans yearning for the third installment.
The gripping second installment in the Taking trilogy is perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and the Body Finder series. Explosive and romantic, with creepy, otherworldly elements and twisty, psychological thrills, The Replaced will have you questioning what exactly it means to be human.
Kyra hasn’t been the same since she returned from her mysterious five-year disappearance. Now on the run from the NSA, Kyra is forced to hide out with others who, like her, have been Returned. Yet she is determined to find Tyler, the boy she loves who was also abducted…all because of her. When her group intercepts a message that Tyler might still be alive, Kyra risks everything to get him back. But he is being held by a shadowy government organization that experiments on the Returned, and going after him puts the rest of the group in danger. Even if Kyra gets Tyler back, the fight to save him—and the rest of the Returned—is just beginning.
