ALA Booklist (Tue Nov 01 00:00:00 CDT 2016)

The books in the Natural Disasters series present simple introductions to some of the world's most dangerous weather and environmental events. Targeting reluctant readers, each two-page spread features short, direct sentences; a large color photo; and a relevant question and answer. Readers are provided a very basic explanation of the natural disaster in question, historic examples of each, and general safety instructions for weathering these dangers. Tornado!describes the EF Scale, which measures a tornado's power by its destructiveness, though the corresponding wind speeds are not provided. The science is cursory at best in the books on severe weather and would have benefited from simple diagrams illustrating how tornadoes or hurricanes form. Still, the dramatic photos of the disasters in action, as well as their aftermaths, will hold many a kid's attention. A high-interest series for browsing or jumping off.

Horn Book (Tue Aug 01 00:00:00 CDT 2017)

This series provides a clear, introductory description of each disaster, its causes, and its effect on communities. The books also include examples of historic disasters; basic details of how scientists predict, measure, and issue warnings (or in the case of Wildfire!, how firefighters control fires); and tips on staying safe. Stock photos, captions, and question-and-answer footers will help engage reluctant readers. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.
