In an affectionate preface, Kline notes that on recent school visits she asked students to name places in school they haven't been to but would love to see. In the eighteenth book in her popular chapter-book series, she takes readers to those forbidden school places as Harry and his best friend, Doug, chase Harry's one-eyed cat, Goog, through the deserted hallways after the kids have gone home and the teachers have congregated in the library for a meeting. Goog leads Harry and Doug to the empty teachers' lounge, through the darkened basement to the boiler room, and, for one bumbling moment, into the girls' restroom. The stern, kind custodian finally brings a stop to their adventure, scolding them and rescuing Goog. The light mischief and innocent defiance of authority will grab the audience.

The plot of this short chapter book will be especially exciting to young readers who themselves dream of peeking into the teachers' lounge.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-The children in room 3B want to know why the school library is closed. Their teacher isn't giving away any secrets, but Horrible Harry and his friend Doug, the narrator, have the inside track: Harry's grandmother is providing a special cake for some unknown occasion, and the boys are determined to get some information from her. Unfortunately, Harry's mischievous cat, The Goog, was in Grandma's truck when she drove to school. When he runs away, he leads Harry and Doug on a chase that takes them to all of the places that students are not supposed to go: specifically the teachers' lounge and the boiler room. Finally, all is well: The Goog is caught and taken home, and Doug and Harry learn that the party is for their teacher, who is getting married. Kline does a good job of maintaining a sense of adventure and a hint of danger as the boys head into forbidden places. Fans will be pleased with this newest installment in the series. Funny black-and-white drawings appear throughout this easy chapter book.-Lynda S. Poling, Long Beach Public Library, CA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
