The last two volumes of this New York Times best-selling series were stuffed to the gills with action, so it's a relief for Jo, Mal, Ripley, April, and Molly to focus on what they came to camp for in the first place: earning badges. First up, the "If you got it, haunt it" badge. Each camper tells a campfire spine-tingler, ranging from not very scary (the scratching on the side of the car was really . . . carbon-monoxide-induced hallucinations!) to the shudderworthy. Elsewhere, Mal and Molly are transported to a dangerous, dinosaur-infested alternate universe, and while they are gone, the rest of the Lumberjanes try to earn some piece-of-cake badges, only to fail spectacularly. Nowack has taken over art duties in this installment, and she retains the bold, cartoonish dynamism and comedic timing of the early installments. Though they don't cover as much of the overarching story line here, Stevenson and Watters prove that there's plenty of fun to be had even in more mundane moments. This series continues to be a must-have.
