Adapting classic stories to the graphic-novel format is nothing new. But with its Original Text versions, the Classical Comics series keeps their adaptations much closer to the original story by lifting dialogue and narration directly from the text (an abridged Quick Text edition is also available). This version maintains Stoker's writing style, telling the story through the letters, journal entries, and recordings of the various characters. Chapters flow seamlessly from one to the next, preventing the pacing from being interrupted and allowing the suspense to build. The artwork combines dramatic action with just enough bodice ripping to remind readers that this classic horror story is also a gothic romance. Where some of the language might be difficult for modern teens to understand, the artwork rises to the forefront to more explicitly illustrate what the text is describing. Back matter includes a short biography of Bram Stoker and an explanation of how the graphic-novel version of the story was created. This is a solid adaptation that students will use for assignments, then recommend to friends.

"I went down into the vaults. There lay the Count!
He was either dead or asleep, I could not say which - for the eyes were open and stony but without the glassiness of death."
