PreS-Gr 2 With friendship sometimes being a tricky thing for children, this story about a girl moving into a new neighborhood offers suggestions and examples of how to be a friend. Told in first person, Lola passes along her experiences with friends ("I love lizards and licorice, and my favorite color is green." "No way! I love lizards and licorice too! But my favorite color is purple."), even some of the negative kind ("Sometimes friends make mistakes, but they always forgive each other."). McCarthy provides Lola with realistic situations that children will relate to and Palacios's fun artwork is expressive, showing a wide range of emotions. This is a good selection for a child who is moving and uncertain about making new friends, though it primarily shows friendship among girls. VERDICT Whether read alone or shared aloud, this is a solid selection that is likely to resonate with the targeted audience. Liz Frame, San Antonio Christian Elementary School
The charming and laugh-out-loud companion to Lola Knows a Lot—perfect for fans of Fancy Nancy and Pinkalicious.
Lola knows a LOT about being a good friend.
She knows friends have lots of things in common…but not everything (that would be boring). Friends are always ready to share…even something gross! Sometimes friends make mistakes…but they ALWAYS forgive each other.
The problem is Lola’s family just moved, and the only person she knows in her new neighborhood is her big sister Charlotte. And Charlotte doesn’t exactly count. Can Lola prove she knows how to MAKE friends, too?
From author Jenna McCarthy and illustrator Sara Palacios comes this adorable tale of a smart and sassy little sister who’s determined to make some friends!
