Readers will become better acquainted with the sometimes baffling dance style known as modern dance in this volume of the Shall We Dance? series. Lanier underscores that the choreography and techniques associated with modern dance are rooted in expressing emotion. This no-frills art form tends to be performed in bare feet and simple costumes, so as not to detract from the emotion behind the movement. Lanier touches on the Graham and Humphrey techniques, and emphasizes the importance of rounded dance training to becoming a modern dancer. The uncluttered layout uses ample white space, a large-sized font, and well-chosen photos that suggest movement and feeling. Though the text is overly general in places, it conveys modern dance's defining characteristics. Boxed "Dance Tips" and appended reading comprehension questions will get readers moving and thinking.
