Starred Review ALA Booklist (Tue May 01 00:00:00 CDT 2018)

Starred Review How exactly do fair and amusement-park rides, skyscrapers, and spacecraft work? These volumes in the Awesome Engineering series focus not only on their history but the science and engineering used in the creation of these structures. Opening with an overview of the structure's purpose and an encompassing visual (e.g., an infographic or time line), the books continue with double-page spreads that use concise, engaging text; sleek, digital graphics; color photos; and numerous chronological examples. Fairground Rides looks at classic rides (e.g., carousels, chair swings, and bumper cars); early to present-day roller coasters; and modern amusement-park rides (e.g., the Orbiter and the Slingshot). Surprises abound in each book, including the Ferris Wheel, which, despite its round shape, uses the triangle for strength; and Taipei 101's giant pendulum, which constantly sways to reduce building movement. Concluding facts offer even more remarkable trivia. The successful blending of high-interest topics with science makes this series awesome, indeed.
