The Garrisons are readying their orchard for winter activities. Peter had enjoyed working the ice cream stand over the summer, but now he feels like an outsider. He misses his buddies from Boston, and he thinks his twin, Olive, is closer to Lizzie and Sarah Garrison, their best friends since moving to New Amity. His gloomy mood brightens when a new classmate, Kai, reveals he also plays Peter's favorite video game, Elf Mirror. Maybe, just maybe, Kai will want to be Peter's friend. Things take a turn for the worse when an accident lands Peter in the hospital; however, he thinks he and Kai have gone through the Elf Mirror and are about to conquer the dragon. In his dream and in real life, Peter realizes Kai is a bully and troublemaker, and Lizzie and Sarah remain his true friends. Although part of the Orchard series and featuring the same diverse cast of characters as Ice Cream Summer (2017), this warm friendship story can stand alone.

Sometimes a new place makes old friends into strangers, or so it seems to Peter Wu. After his dads move him and his twin sister, Olive, from Boston to racially and ethnically diverse New Amity, New Hampshire, he becomes invisible. Olive spends all her time with new friends; Peter tags along and tries to join the conversation, but his voice is quickly drowned out. Feeling lonely and unheard, his only solace is playing "Elf Mirror," a video game in which the player must save a mythical land from a dragon. A new classmate, olive-skinned Kai Delikatua, shakes things up at school when he walks into Peter's language arts class. He is defiant and not afraid to speak up; he is also a fan of "Elf Mirror." Peter decides that Kai will be his new friend. However, Kai's idea of friendship is a bit too daring for Peter, and he might not be the perfect playmate. But is it too late for Peter to rekindle old friendships? Atwood's latest in the Orchard series is an empathetic journey through Peter's struggle to find his voice, and readers will recognize his trouble interpreting murky emotions. They will also appreciate seeing how the patience and understanding exhibited by his fathers create a safe space for Peter to explore his feelings and experiences. Andrewson's illustrations add a whimsical charm to each chapter, depicting Peter and Olive as black. Endearing. (Fiction. 8-12)

Wintertime at the orchard has Peter learning some important lessons about speaking up in this second novel of a sweet series about the bonds of friendship.

Blanketed in snow, the orchard looks like a magical wonderland. But Peter is not so charmed by his new life. He just can’t ignore how he’s always ignored any longer. Sarah, Lizzie, and Olive are always talking over him and bossing him around. And on top of that, it’s really cold outside.

One January day, Peter reluctantly agrees to join the girls on a carriage ride through the freshly fallen snow. But things go terribly wrong when a dog incident has the horses running away in fear, with Peter and the carriage trailing dangerously behind them. Then, Peter hits his head on a passing branch and is thrown to the ground.

Woozy, Peter wakes up alone in the snow but he makes his way to a cozy cottage. Kai, the cool new kid, opens the door and welcomes Peter inside. Kai shows him a magical mirror that brings the two new friends to another world. A world where people listen to Peter and need his help to defeat dragons, warlocks, and other scary things.

Then Peter wakes up in the hospital with a bandage around his head. Everyone is so happy to see him awake. Peter tries to tell them all about the mirror but they dismiss his experience as a wild dream. When Peter goes back to school, it seems like Kai knows what Peter’s talking about. Could the dream have been real? Is there really a magic portal deep in the woods behind the orchard? Even if everyone thinks he’s crazy, Peter is determined to find out.
