From its slyly political title on, the Making America Great: Immigrant Success Stories series explores the achievements of immigrants and the ways in which they have bettered the U.S. across disciplines. Arranged by medium, Famous Immigrant Artists covers everything from historical painters and sculptors like Haitian-born John James Audubon and French Louise Bourgeois to modern-day film artists like Taiwanese American Doug Chiang and international street artists like Banksy. The layout is text heavy, and Artists especially would have benefited from more illustrations, but sidebars explain more about immigration and the factors that cause a person to leave his or her home. A valuable, if verbose, reminder about America's strengths.

The United States has often been described as a melting pot, and many people who have immigrated to the U.S. from other countries in search of the American dream have contributed not just their cultural histories and traditions, but their artistic spirit as well. This book covers important immigrant artists such as the naturalist painter John James Audubon, Superman co-creator Joe Shuster, multimedia artist Yoko Ono, cartoonist Art Spiegelman, and the street artist Thierry Guetta (Mr. Brainwash). Immigrant artists have collectively helped to make America great through their tremendous impact on the visual arts.
