The life of Harvey Milk gets a brisk treatment in this entry in the Spotlight on Civic Courage: Heroes of Conscience series. The book marches along from Milk's New York boyhood, through his time in the navy and as a teacher, to his activism and politics in San Francisco. Several of his boyfriends are introduced, along with the effect they had on Milk's life, but another thread is his unwillingness to share information about his sexuality with family and friends, especially in his youth. Although there are plenty of facts here, this isn't a deep dive. For instance, the secretive lives of gay men in the 1950s and beyond is discussed, but readers get no personal feel for just how shuttered and often dangerous time it was for them. Sometimes factual context is lacking: the death of Milk (and San Francisco mayor George Moscone) is handled in several sentences that don't even place the murder. On the plus side, there are many photographs (and a handwritten love letter) that add depth to this well-documented portrait.

Harvey Milk dreamed of a better tomorrow filled with love and equal rights for all. In 1977, Milk was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, only to be assassinated less than a year after he took office. Through his personal and professional life, Harvey Milk became a role model and beacon of hope for many members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community. Readers will examine the life of this civic hero, including his struggles as a young man, who inspired the first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.
