Each book in the Day at the Beach: Animal Life on the Shore series introduces one or more creature living by the sea. Color photos offer clear views of the subjects, while arrows connect labels with features in the pictures, and captions provide additional comments. Though all the books use the same format, the information presented varies according to each volume's subject. Typically, they mention the animals' physical features, distinctive traits and behaviors, diet, and how they raise their young. A few short lines of large-print text appear on each double-page spread, along with a full-page photo and one or more smaller ones. Seagulls presents herring gulls, whose range extends 1,000 miles inland in some parts of North America. Few other children's books are available on this familiar bird. Libraries may want to consider this satisfactory series or individual volumes as needed.

A little fishing boat is chugging toward the shore. It's being chased by a squawking flock of seagulls. The birds swoop down to the water to greedily grab the fish scraps thrown from the boat. When their fishy feast is over, the gulls fly back to the beach to continue feeding. Filled with information perfectly suited to the abilities and interests of its primary-grade audience, this colorful, fact-filled book gives readers a chance not only to learn all about seagulls and their seashore habitat, but also develop their powers of observation and critical thinking. Children will investigate, for example, how seagulls defend their territories and use vomit to keep their chicks safe from predators. Get ready for a fun and interesting day at the beach!
