(Spotlight on Weather and Natural Disasters). further reading. glossary. index. photos. websites. PowerKids . Aug. 2018. lib. ed. $26.25. Gr 3-6 This weather-wise series teaches not only what's forecast but how. Books cover the whys of extreme weather (thunderstorms, floods, mudslides, etc.) and explain concepts such as the water cycle or the earth's atmosphere. The simple layout, large font, and ample spacing make for an uninterrupted reading experience. Large, clear, sometimes awe-inspiring, color photographs appear on most pages. Each entry also features a primary source list; unfortunately, it includes only photograph notes rather than information sources. Chasing Extreme Weather and Clouds and Precipitation serve as nice companions to Lauren Tarshis's "I Survived" books. The emphasis on personal safety and global warming's connection to the rise in extreme weather keeps the material relevant. VERDICT Additional purchases as needed, but pay special attention to the high-interest natural disaster titles.

Air moves in large bodies called air masses. When two air masses bump into each other, the place where they meet is called a front. This is where weather often occurs. This fact-filled book explores air masses and fronts using age-appropriate text and full-color photographs. Students will learn where air masses form, how they move, and what happens when they meet. Different types of fronts and the weather they cause are also covered in detail. Primary sources add depth and provide students with real-life examples of air masses and fronts in action.
