Documents and objects from the past are invaluable to our understanding of history, and the Eye on Historical Sources series (8 titles) weaves such materials into its brief overviews of significant moments in U.S. history. There is a particular emphasis on primary sources here, and readers are encouraged via direct questions to determine whether something letter or painting, for instance alifies as a primary source and what it can teach us, regardless. Although these are useful exercises, the books are regrettably uneven in their handling of information. Ellis Island, on the other hand, provides a definition on page nine, making its inclusion of a ship passenger list and period photos more relevant to its discussion of immigration. Despite the inconsistencies, this series could be useful in a classroom setting, where teachers could fill in any gaps and utilize the books' well-written critical-thinking questions.

Between 1892 and 1954, millions of immigrants passed through the threshold of Ellis Island and became American citizens. From Ellis Island, these immigrants spread out all over the country. Many helped build the U.S. infrastructure and helped make the country one of the greatest in the world. Readers will view numerous primary sources surrounding Ellis Island and the people who visited the immigration center. These sources include letters, paintings, photographs, maps, and more. In addition, sidebars prompt readers to think critically about the primary resources and to answer essential questions about them.
