The Life Skills series (6 titles) tackles problems that face young people every day. The books in the series not only describe and identify the issues but they also offer suggestions and strategies to help readers get more control over their problems. Though drugs and bullying may get more press, Always Broke? tackles a practical issue many struggle with, even into adulthood. After explaining how money evolved, the book goes on to discuss how young people can earn money, find a balance between saving and spending, deal with debt, and keep track of their cash. All the books feature several "skills for life" boxes with specific suggestions. A helpful series for library shelves.

Gr 6-8 Puberty is challenging enough without the added pressures from bullies, family troubles, drugs, and financial dependency on others. This series prepares teens to tackle these tough issues in a smart, well-informed way. Each volume provides thoroughly detailed background knowledge about its subject so that young people can make better-informed decisions in their lives. The survival strategies and practical tips contained within are quite good and are presented in a practical and appealing manner. Clear infographics are also presented with steps to take for successful management of each topic to reach one's goal. Self-esteem's role in healthy decision-making is stressed, as is being in touch with one's feelings and able to communicate them effectively. With its gentle, reassuring tone, like that of a helpful older sibling or caregiver, this series should not be missed. VERDICT An essential guide to navigating the challenges of puberty and life beyond.
