Few books for young people tackle the topic of social class directly. An American studies professor at Macalester College, Harris "curates" the new Class in America series (8 titles), in which she and her coauthors present each topic through current and historical information as well as stories and insights. Probably most relevant to young people with some knowledge of social issues, the clearly written discussions place narratives and data within a broader context that makes them more meaningful. The books acknowledge the particular challenges faced by minority groups dealing with discrimination within American society. Illustrations, including graphs and archival images as well as many full-page colorful stock photos, appear on about half of the double-page spreads. Being Poor in America discusses the causes and history of poverty in America as well as difficulties faced by the poor in both urban and rural settings today. Presenting useful overviews of topics related to class differences, these books will leave readers with ideas to ponder.

This unique series--geared to school reports but with intriguing topics and ideas that go beyond the curriculum--could also provide support for debates and political action for motivated readers. Charts, graphs, archival photos, and contemporary color photos break up the dense information and detailed sidebars. Lots of discussion-starter questions make these books relevant to today's readers.
