Each book in the Heroes of World War II series (6 new titles) has a dramatic opening that leads into four chapters describing historical events and reflecting on what was accomplished. Written in short sentences that flow well, the paragraphs and chapters are also relatively brief but surprisingly effective as introductions to their respective topics. This continuing series also includes a recent book on Dunkirk, a subject previously explored more often in children's fiction than nonfiction. Each volume includes a large map related to the topic as well as many well-captioned archival photos and a few illustrated sidebars. ?The Manhattan Project describes the origins, development, use, and aftereffects of the first atomic bombs. Useful for older readers reading below grade levels as well as middle-grade students, this series offers engaging presentations on aspects of the war.
