ALA Booklist (Thu Nov 01 00:00:00 CDT 2018)

These new books in the Beginning-to-Read: Read and Discover Science series (8 new titles) explore basic ideas in the life, earth, and physical sciences. Some of the books focus on ideas that are extremely basic, while others add detail or tell more of a story. Texture describes various textures of solids and liquids. The books utilize colorful photos that cover most of each page and aptly, if not compellingly, illustrate the concepts discussed. Each title concludes with a chart that visually sums up the main idea or ideas, although the thumbnail photos are often too small to be clear. The books connect strongly to both science and reading standards. Back matter includes close-reading activities, such as graphic organizers; tips for reading fluency; and separate high-frequency, content, and academic vocabulary lists. These books are good resources for basic science concepts and for classroom use.
