The structures certain animals build in the wild are truly astonishing, and the Animal Engineers series zeros in on just this. The volumes' reader format makes good use of white space, large text size, captioned illustrations, glossary-defined terms, colorful "Fun Fact" boxes, and text-related focus questions. The main text is divided into four chapters that introduce an animal; the home (or, in the case of the chimpanzee, bed) it builds; how this engineering feat is accomplished; and its impact on the environment at large. Beehives offers many wonderful close-up photos of bees and their hives while explaining basic colony structure and how cells within a hive are formed and used. The books' high-quality photos will certainly grab kids' attention, giving these light introductions pick-me-up appeal.
