Aug. 2018. lib. ed. $31.35. Gr 5-8 With content exploring each state's history in relation to professional, collegiate, and recreational sports, this series dives deep into regional interest in a wide variety of athletic pursuits. There is much to learn in each title, from individual athlete profiles to Colorado's status as a prime training hub because of its high elevation and lower oxygen level. However, while each book mentions the displacement of Native peoples in its state's history, the brutality is glossed over in relatively rosy terms. For readers who may not be familiar with the relationships between Euro-Americans and Indigenous peoples, the oversimplification provides a very incomplete picture, to say the least. VERDICT Most collections will want to skip.
