Starred Review Subjects like civil rights, the environment, the LGBTQ movement, and women's rights have been written about in many youth books but often in bits and pieces. So kudos to the Push for Social Change series (4 titles) for providing comprehensive looks at how these movements began, progressed, and, in some cases, are faring today. Despite the fact each book has a different author, the series' hallmark is the clarity of the writing and a deep dig into the history, often highlighting personal stories or pieces of history that are lesser known. The Civil Rights Movement, for instance, discusses how during the 1963 March on Washington, Martin Luther King Jr. abandoned his original, prepared speech and launched into his now-famous "I Have a Dream" oration off the cuff. The images throughout are well chosen, and visually accented time lines helpfully open each volume. Excellent additions to history collections.
Bibliography Index/Note:
Includes bibliographical references (pages 69-76) nd index.
Social change can occur slowly and quietly but it is often the result of large numbers of people mobilizing for the purpose of bringing about change. The Push for Social Change series explores how and why social change occurs and what impact major movements have had on people's lives. All books will examine the events that led to particular social change movements; what those movements did; how and why they did it; and the short-term and long-term impact of those movements. Quotes from people on all sides of these events add insight and interest to the discussion. Book jacket.
