These easy-reader editions (originally published as picture books Mouse's First Fall and Mouse's First Summer, respectively) feature "slightly different text" but keep the same low-key, season-themed adventures of adorably inquisitive Mouse and big sister Minka. Question-and-answer texts ("Over there, Mouse finds something green and tickly. / What is it? A grassy hill!") and Erdogan's original round-edged illustrations are both appealing.
School Library Journal
PreS-K Mouse goes through the day with big sister Minka finding yummy things to eat and fun things to do that make for an ideal summer day. Filled with warm and inviting illustrations, the book chronicles each new discovery along with a short and simple description. To add interest for young readers, each of the brief narratives ends with the simple question; "What is it?" Not only does the picture help provide the answer, but word clues are also provided in bold text. For instance, Mouse sees something "red and juicy" and the accompanying picture shows a large slice of watermelon. Later on in the story, the pair find something "orange and floaty" and we see a kite flying in the wind. VERDICT This engaging series entry can be used as part of a shared reading experience or as a pleasing introduction to independent reading. The short, simple sentences and cozy illustrations are ideal for beginning reader sections. Amy Nolan, St. Joseph Public Library, MI
