Sept. 2018. lib. ed. $25. Gr 2-4 Each book in the series introduces a variety of animals that share a common trait. The creatures are grouped into three chapters: "Cool Camouflage," for example, looks at color, mimicry, and patterns. Well-written text boxes provide a brief but efficient overview of the animal's key characteristics. In addition to a large spread-size image, an inset photo offers an extra fact about the featured beast or one with related qualities. The images show the animals in action, usually depicting the highlighted behavior effectively. Most of the predator photographs don't include prey, though, and more maps could have made the journeys in Amazing Migrations easier for young readers to picture. Closing pages offer interactive opportunities: a comparison of two extraordinary animals followed by a simple quiz with visual cues. VERDICT Generally engaging surveys for large nonfiction collections.
