A young chipmunk wonders what Christmas is and sets out to find the answer. His mother encourages him to think about what the holiday means. As they walk through the forest, they see woodland animals busily preparing for the arrival of Christmas. Badgers decorate with berries, a beetle family marches up a tree with presents strapped to their backs, and geese sing carols as they fly overhead. With each turn of the page, the little chipmunk asks "Is that Christmas?" Each is a part of Christmas, Mama tells him, but he still doesn't understand. The little chipmunk falls asleep wondering if he'll ever know what Christmas is. Charming illustrations with a retro, Disney-esque feel offer close-up views of life in the forest. As Christmas dawns, the woods are blanketed in snow, the chipmunk's head the only thing visible against starkly white pages. He and Mama head up a hill and join all of the birds and animals in a joyful celebration of community. At last, the little chipmunk understands what Christmas is about. A simple, repetitive pattern of observation, question, and Mama's wise answer builds suspense for children who also ponder the true meaning of Christmas. The book's sparkly cover with its straightforward title will assure children that they will, in the end, know what Christmas is.Perfect for snuggling up with on a cozy Christmas Eve. Nature and kinship anchor this story, a dialogue between a curious young chipmunk and his mother. Asked by her child what Christmas is, the mother responds, -Christmas is many things, little one,- and throws the question back to him: -What do you think it means?- Observing a badger decorating his burrow with berries, a family of beetles carrying grass-wrapped gifts on their backs, and geese singing carols overhead, the chipmunk asks, -Is that Christmas?- Each time, her reply is the same: -That-s part of it.- He finally finds his answer on Christmas morning, when he awakens to newly fallen snow and animals cavorting and singing as one. Arriving cardinals bring splashes of cheering scarlet to stylized art by Booth (Don-t Tell!), offering an agreeable complement to this open-ended story of a joyful community celebrating the holiday. Ages 4-8. (Sept.)

PreS-Gr 1 A young chipmunk witnesses other animals in the forest preparing for something called Christmas, but he is not sure what it is. He asks his mother if Christmas is decorating, or exchanging gifts, or maybe even singing carols. His mama replies that he will find out in due time, and the little chipmunk awakens on Christmas Day to a beautiful surprise. The wide-eyed and animated animal characters are as cute as can be and the backgrounds are a contrast of deep jewel tones and stark white. The text is as pristine as the digitally created illustrations, and even the youngest listeners will be riveted. Excitement builds as the little chipmunk discovers more and more elements of Christmas, and readers will look forward to seeing how they all come together in the end. z VERDICT A feel-good, warm and cozy animal holiday tale without any commercial trappings. Amy Shepherd, St. Anne's Episcopal School, Middleton, DE

From the author and illustrator of Night at the Stadium and Day at the Beach comes a modern holiday classic about a chipmunk who has to learn the true meaning of Christmas.

It is Christmas Eve and Little Chipmunk asks his mother, “What is Christmas, Mama?” His Mama tells him that Christmas is many things and as they walk together through the woods, Little Chipmunk sees badgers decorating their burrow with bright red berries, ducks exchanging holidays greetings on golden leaves, beetles carrying presents on their shiny backs, and geese singing in the winter sky. Each time he asks his mother if this is Christmas, and each time she answers, that yes, this is part of Christmas.

Night falls and Little Chipmunk and his Mama snuggle in to sleep. When he wakes up on Christmas morning, he is surprised by the wonderland that greets him: all the world is blanketed in deep snow. And, then, one by one, Chipmunk and his mother see the geese, the badgers, the ducks, and the beetles, as well as some new forest friends—all gathered to celebrate joy and friendship, beauty and wonder, love and kindness—all of what Christmas truly means.
