Inseparable since childhood, Zan and Priya have a friendship that can withstand a lot d so, though she's heartbroken about Priya's sudden move from Chicago to California, Zan hardly expects Priya to just ghost her. But that's exactly what Priya does, going suddenly silent despite Zan's repeated attempts to contact her by email and phone. Priya's Instagram, though, is filled with posts that don't even sound like her: standard shots of California accompanied by bland captions. It's not until Zan meets Logan, the new guy in her Spanish class, with a mysterious past of his own, that she's able to say out loud the crazy things she's been thinking: that's not Priya. Priya's in trouble. And it's up to Zan, who knows her well enough to pull out the minuscule clues in her social media, to figure out how to save her. This fast-paced debut features a smart, deeply insecure heroine and is as much an examination of friendship as it is a light thriller. A mystery for the digital age.

She swore she'd always put "ladies before mateys," then she ghosts on her best friend? That's just shady.Zan Martini and Priya Patel are inseparable. They share a nickname game, a wealth of inside jokes, and years of happy memories. Zan knows she'll miss Priya when she moves to California. But when Priya ignores all her texts, phone calls, and emails, Zan is devastated. All she has left is Instagram, but Priya's inane, pseudo-motivational posts sound nothing like her smart, articulate self. Nearly everyone in Zan's life counsels her to move on—including her therapist mom, the dad she sees every week, the police officer who once coached her in self-defense, even their manager at the restaurant, whose paychecks keep bouncing from Priya's new address. The only one willing to listen to Zan and assist her amateur sleuthing is Logan, the handsome new kid in school. But Zan's not sure she's ready to trust someone else with her heart, and even Logan seems to harbor a dark secret. Loutzenhiser's debut is an engaging (although not impenetrable) puzzler anchored by well-realized and endearing characters with diverse family structures. Zan, Logan, and their birth families are white. Priya's mother is Indian, and her stepfather white. Zan's mother has a live-in girlfriend with brown skin. The supporting cast includes Latinx and Korean characters.A light, charming mystery and a heartfelt ode to female friendship. (Fiction. 12-18)

“Funny, engrossing, and one-of-a-kind. If You’re Out There completely swept me away.” —Becky Albertalli, New York Times bestselling author of Leah on the Offbeat

Part whip-smart suspense tale, part touching story of friendship, this is an extraordinary debut about a determined teen trying to solve a mystery no one else believes in.

After Zan’s best friend moves to California, she is baffled and crushed when Priya suddenly ghosts. Worse, Priya’s social media has turned into a stream of ungrammatical posts chronicling a sunny, vapid new life that doesn’t sound like her at all.

Everyone tells Zan not to be an idiot: Let Priya do her reinvention thing and move on. But until Zan hears Priya say it, she won’t be able to admit that their friendship is finished.

It’s only when she meets Logan, the compelling new guy in Spanish class, that Zan begins to open up about her sadness, her insecurity, her sense of total betrayal. And he’s just as willing as she is to throw himself into the investigation when everyone else thinks her suspicions are crazy.

Then a clue hidden in Priya’s latest selfie introduces a new, deeply disturbing possibility:

Maybe Priya isn’t just not answering Zan’s emails.

Maybe she can’t.
