The Seven Realms regional conflicts are about to become international, as a small band of spies, healers, pirates, soldiers, and royalty try to caution their respective homes about an imminent threat from the ruthless mage Empress and her zombielike armies. All of them have their own reasons for wanting her stopped, and their only chance is to overcome past conflicts and trust each other. The third entry in the Shattered Realms series is even more riveting than the first two, Flamecaster (2016) and Shadowcaster (2017). Previously, Chima introduced characters, conflicts, history, and setting, and although she enriches the personal narrative of an earlier minor character, relationships and political complications dominate this volume. Each chapter or two moves to a new hot spot, and tension increases at a quickening pace as the looming war approaches. This book proves another cliff-hanger, with partnerships in flux and identities still hidden. Readers may wish for a scorecard, but Chima effortlessly juggles her players and weaves their plotlines into a seamless whole that will leave series fans anxious for more.

In this sweeping penultimate series entry, an epic cast of mages, pirates, royal heirs, and spymasters scheme to unite the warring Seven Realms against invading Empress Celestine, who uses zombie-like bloodsworn soldiers to enforce her will. An overabundance of plot lines, characters, and backstories may leave even devoted fans confused, but the plentiful supply of romance, magic, and palace intrigue will keep them turning pages.

From New York Times bestselling author Cinda Williams Chima comes the third gripping adventure in the Shattered Realms series, where intricately interwoven storylines converge as the warring Seven Realms struggle to unite against a horrific tyrant.

Vagabond seafarer Evan Strangward can move wind, waves, and weather, but his magical abilities can’t protect him forever from the brutal Empress Celestine. As Celestine’s relentless bloodsworn armies grow, Evan travels to the Fells to warn the queendom that an invasion is imminent.

If he can’t convince the Gray Wolf queen to take a stand, he knows that the Seven Realms will fall, and his last sanctuary will be destroyed. Among the dead will be the one person Evan can’t stand to lose.

Meanwhile, the queen’s formidable daughter, Princess Alyssa ana’Raisa, is already a prisoner aboard the empress’s ship, sailing east. Lyss may be the last remaining hope of bringing down the empress from within her own tightly controlled stronghold.
