ALA Booklist (Mon Apr 01 00:00:00 CDT 2019)

In this volume in the All Around the World series (25 titles), young readers get a brief but colorful tour of Guatemala. The first chapter welcomes readers with smiling Guatemalan children, native wildlife (like the quetzal and anteater), and an active volcano. The second chapter offers glimpses of the country's history and monuments, schools, and crops. Cultural notes fill the last chapter with a Guatemalan meal, a labeled depiction of traditional Mayan clothing, and preparations for an Easter parade. Clearly labeled photo illustrations dominate most pages, with the main text appearing in colored bands or boxes, including "What Do You Think?" question boxes. Strangely, Guatemala's location and primary languages are only mentioned on the concluding "Quick Facts" page. Nevertheless, curious kids will be drawn to this accessible and attractive book.
