It's easy to vilify the internet and social media, but the titles in the Critical Thinking about Digital Media series (6 titles) acknowledge their staying power and benefits while also equipping students with skills to evaluate and use them thoughtfully. While each book addresses a different topic, they all use recent and relevant examples from the news, and from academic studies, and work together to reinforce similar themes. The Bubble of Confirmation Bias first gives a brief history of the subject and continues with how social-media algorithms, muting and blocking on social media, fake news, and other factors contribute to confirmation bias. The volumes also offer strategies for identifying fake news, cyberbullies, and confirmation bias, as well as tips for staying safe online. Chapter notes, a glossary, and further resources round out each volume in this thorough series for media literacy.

Confirmation bias is the tendency of people to interpret, remember, and specifically seek out information that confirms beliefs they already have. It's part of how the human brain works. Being aware of its existence and how it can creep into your life is the best defense. A growing feeder of confirmation bias in the modern world is the internet, particularly social media, where it's easy to surround yourself with a bubble of like-minded people. In this text we will explore the ways that the social media bubble encourages confirmation bias, and how to combat it.
