These entries in the Graphic History series (4 titles) use the illustrated-panel structure of comics and graphic novels to tell about warriors from specific time periods and cultures. Educational text appears in small boxes within individual panels and is supported by thought and speech bubbles that express the characters' ideas. The illustrations also contain details about technical fighting equipment particular to each kind of fighter. Back matter adds helpful details about both geography and the time span metimes surprisingly brief which each kind of fighter was active. These books will draw visual learners and history buffs into a high-interest aspect of medieval Japan and Europe, but some may be put off by the considerable violence. Some parents and teachers might also object to the multiple tales of unprovoked slaughter in each volume, for which more context would have made the mayhem slightly more palatable. Ninjas retells the stories of several legendary ninjas, such as Hattori Hanzo and female ninja Mochizuki Chiyome, and their exploits. For those who can stomach the violence, these books present an exciting window into history.

When thinking about Ninjas people often picture deadly killers wearing black clothing. However, while ninjas could be fierce and skilled warriors, they weren't just assassins who sneaked around in the dark. They more often worked as spies and secret agents who gathered intelligence and information on enemy clans. Dynamic illustrations and engaging tales of ninja warriors teach readers what it was like to be a stealthy secret agent in Medieval Japan.
