Gr 3-5 Each volume uses a graphic-novel format to tell the story of a fictional family and its activities in an ancient civilization. The term "everyday" in these titles should not be confused with "average"the people examined in all but China and India are from privileged families. While some information is conveyed in captions, most comes from somewhat stilted dialogue as characters declare various facts about their lives. The author includes discussions of the subservience of women, the commonality of slavery, India's caste system, Roman gladiatorial combat, and Mayan human sacrifice. However, no bloodshed appears within these pages. The art is realistic but unexceptional. These books should give readers an introductory glimpse of life in the ancient world.
