Though sketchy, this dramatized account of Magellan's life and voyage may draw younger or less able readers with its graphic-style presentation. Despite occasional slipups ("Please take this note to the king," commands the queen, handing the young Ferdinand . . . a book), the large, easy-to-read panels of art offer figures in period costume who pose and emote with rousing theatricality in depictions of the troubled expedition's hardships, multiple attempted mutinies, battle with Pacific Islanders (during which Magellan was killed), and other major events described in the boxed passages of running commentary. Other accounts, notably Stuart Waldman's Magellan's World (2007), provide a broader, more detailed picture of the journey and its historical significance, but this entry in the Junior Graphic Famous Explorers series supplies the basic facts without looking like obvious assignment reading.
